Therapy is covered under HIPAA. As a result, the only time anyone can find out you are in therapy is if you share that information with them. Times when there may be an exception would be if counseling is required for a legal matter, there are dangers of harm to self or others, or if a therapist or record is subpoenaed by a court of law.
Therapy or counseling is always confidential. There are 3 exceptions: if suspected child abuse or elder abuse is reported, if a person reports an intention to hurt others, or a person is in danger of hurting or killing themselves.
The words therapy and counseling are often used interchangeably. But technically they are not the same thing. The context of the situation matters. Counseling is often a brief therapeutic intervention designed to focus on a specific issue. Therapy or psychotherapy is geared towards more complex concerns. Based on what is happening for an individual or family, counseling may become therapy, if more complex issues present themselves.
Therapy sessions can vary in length. A typical full session lasts for 53min-60min. There are shorter sessions lasting approximately 45min, or a half session that lasts 20min-30min.
The shortest session you can attend for an individual session is 20 minutes.
